The BBC Music Magazine first cover DVD some time ago was excellent. I remember that it caused sound and furry mainly by the bulk of the older subscribers. The main argument was: ‘I do not want to see the music but listen to it.’ However, a music video DVD played on a home theater system is a recreation of the music hall and, in my opinion, is definitely better experience compared to a music CD. I understand that it is very difficult for the British audience to change habits as it is impossible to drive on the right. I am sure that some of the readers would like better a vinyl record to a CD and few would definitely opt for Edison’s cylinders. I also understand that if BBCMM insisted on a free DVD, large numbers of readers would flood Trafalgar Square picketing for a music CD and threatening to stop buying the magazine or canceling their subscriptions. Well, as the BBCMM is international and a number of readers subscribe specifically for the BBC music CD with the archived performances, I do not see why a DVD of BBC archived material (e.g. proms) can not be offered at least once a year. Thus, the old generation of readers would be educated and introduced to the new visual and acoustic technology and may have liked it before they passed away and at the same time, the others, the DVD aficionado would be satisfied with performances that otherwise would not be able to enjoy.
